Every year on January 15th, we celebrate the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, his commitment to community, to activism, and to a vision of a country where anyone with a dream can see it come to fruition. This year, the University of Indianapolis will be celebrating Dr. King’s legacy through community engaged service projects that impact our local community and our UIndy community. We have partnered with key organizations that live out the vision of Dr. King through servant leadership, community engagement and mentorship.
Participants should expect to arrive by 10am to hear brief remarks from some of our community partners before they choose which service project they would like to participate in. The day will conclude around 1pm. Learn more about the service projects we are offering below
Students, Staff, Faculty and community members are welcome to participate, come join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr on Monday, January 15th in Schwitzer Student Center!
Hornet Park Community Center
The Hornet Park Community Center is committed to serving the youth and families in the Beech Grove Community. All park programs are open to the public and are always free or low cost to allow everyone access to fun, affordable, educational activities designed to build community. This year we are collaborating with Hornet Park to create boxes of food and winter items that will be passed out to members of the Beech Grove community as well as donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Central Indianapolis.
Hunger Inc.
Since 1983 the mission of Hunger Inc. has been to provide food to those who demonstrate an immediate need. The clients who come to Hunger Inc. for help have faced a variety of crises such as unemployment, unexpected medical bills or a reduction in their income. Hunger Inc. has been distributing food at no cost to residents of ZIP codes 46107, 46217, 46227 and 46237 since 1983. Our service area includes Perry Township, Franklin Township and a portion of Beech Grove. Those who are assisted receive enough food to last several days. This year we are teaming up with Hunger Inc to create reusable tote bags for participants of both the UIndy and Hunger Inc community food pantries.
Boys and Girls Club of Indianapolis
When the school bell rings for the end of the day, many Indianapolis youth are left with few options for positive after-school activities. Some are at home with no adult care or supervision, not because they do not have great caretakers, but because caretakers must work long hours to support their families. Young people need to know that someone cares when guardians cannot be there. Boys & Girls Clubs offer that and more. Club programs and services help youth understand they matter. The Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow – all while having fun. It is a place where Great Futures are started each and every day. This year BGC will be joining us to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King by participating in our service activities.
